Este tour esta específicamente diseñado para la fotografía del buey almizclero y otras especies árticas en condiciones invernales, en un momento específico del año en el que las condiciones ambientales y meteorológicas son aún propicias.

El mes de noviembre es un momento muy especial en Groenlandia, aun el invierno no ha llegado con toda su crudeza y los grupos de bueyes almizcleros se encuentran en sectores accesibles para el fotógrafo, ya han caído las primeras nieves, pero las temperaturas son muy soportables, y se dan las mejores condiciones anuales para conseguir nuestros objetivos fotográficos.

Junto a los bueyes nos encontraremos con zorros árticos, liebres árticas, caribus o buhos nivales entre muchos otros objetivos fotográficos.

Pero Groenlandia da para mucho más, paisajísticamente es brutal, y en nuestro viaje, visitaremos el "Ice Cap" o el hielo interior groenlandés que en algunos sectores tiene un espesor de hasta 3 kilómetros y cubre como un enorme manto blanco el 80% de la superficie de Groenlandia.

Pasaremos igualmente 3 días en Ilulissat, Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO, visitando la bahía Disko, repleta de icebergs, y el glaciar Sermeq Kujalleq,  el glaciar que mas icebergs produce del hemisferio norte. Se cree que el iceberg que hundió el Titanic nació aquí.

En este lugar tendremos la opción de sobrevolar en helicóptero el glaciar y la bahía.

Las auroras boreales además harán acto de presencia muchas de las noches en nuestro viaje.

Que duda cabe que visitar Groenlandia es impresionante en cualquier momento del año, pero para el fotógrafo de naturaleza, la estampa de los bueyes en medio de una ventisca de nieve con sus pelajes cubiertos del este elemento es una de las imágenes mas evocadoras que pueden obtenerse.

Programme

Musk oxen is an icon for wildlife photographers of all the world.

This fantastic animal portray these bleak arctic lands, where endure cold hurricane winds and survive eating blunt vegetation.

Esthetically is a fabulous animal, magnificient, with a huge body volume that impresive to the traveler, that search them in the cold tundra.

Some areas of Greenland are one of the places with higer density of this animals in the world, and the frozen lands around Kangerlussuaq sanctuary for this animal.

Itinerary

August 23th: Madrid – Copenhagen

Norwegian flight, departure from Madrid 15:00h and arrival at Copenhagen at 18:15h.

Overnight in Copenhagen, Hotel near the airport, and dinner.

August 24th: Departure of Air Greenland flight to Kangerlussuaq at 9:00horas, arrival at Greenland at 9:40AM).

Welcome at Kangerlussuaq Airport by your guide. Bus to the accommodation. Tour to the Ice Cap for photo shooting by the Ice Cap, taking a picnic lunch. Night at the hotel and dinner.

August 25th: We drive to  Tasersuatsiaq (Lake Ferguson). From here we hike with light bag to our tent site, where tents, sleeping bag and cooking gear is ready at our camp deep in the wilderness at the musk ox lake. We have very good chances of seeing musk oxen already on the first day, which goes through some beatiful and varied landscape. The hike can be a bit challenging for some at times, but we are packed light and take it easy on our hike to camp have lunch on way and time for photo opportunities Night in tent camp.

August 26th, 27th and 28th: Often we will see the musk oxen right by camp, but a hike in the area increases our chances. After yesterdays hike we are now surrounded by arctic wilderness and have good chances for wildlife encounters close to camp. We go mainly for musk oxen photo shoot today. Chances of Northern Light late at night. We will take advantage too of the presence of other mammal species, such as arctic fox, caribou, arctic hare and others.

We will move with the experience of the previous days, and probably we divide the group in two for getting closer to the animals without disturb them.Night in tent camp.

August 29th: Last full day in the camp, probably with a good number of good musk oxen pictures. Today we go for other wildlife such as arctic snow hare, arctic fox and birds. The camp is often visited by the white arctic fox and the lake by camp is one of the favourite spots for the beautiful great northern diver. Chances of Northern Light late at night. We go for more landspace scenery photos. Being in the highlands allready, we get many great sight over the vast uninhabitet arctic wilderness. On way we will use any opportunity to supplement with more wildlife pictures as chances appear. Chances of Northern Light late at night. Night in tent camp.
August 30th: Our camp is packed down and we head back to civilization. This time we are going downhill which gives us more time and we will pass the Inuit remains we see on the way. Graves, the inland tent house, meat caches and more tells us about the former life and death of the Inuit Culture, the predececors of todays Greenlanders. Night at hotel and dinner.

August 31th: Departure to Cophenage, taking the flight of Air Greenland at 13:10, landing at 21:30.

September 1st: Departure of the IBERIA flight to Madrid at 15:15h arriving 18:30h.

Accommodation

Hotels near the airport in Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaqa, during the two first and twio last days, and accommodation in tented camps in Tasersuatsiaq.

Meals

Included in the price, menus in the hotels or picnic lunch during the excursions. Fresh food cooked in the tented camp by the local guides.

Equipment

Footwear

- Warm boots with preferably Vibram soles for that extra grip
- Running shoes or sandals. To be used in camp in the evenings or for lighter walking days
- Heavyweight wool socks.

Clothing

- Goretex shell pants and jacket with hood
- Heavy weight down jacket with hood
- Mid to heavyweight fleece jacket
- Light to mid weight fleece pants
- Fleece gloves
- Warm wool or fleecy hat
- Sun hat
- Light weight climbers’ headlamp for use at night around the camp. Bring extra batteries
- High quality sunglasses with 100% UV protection
- High quality Binoculars / Telescope

Personal Equipment

- 4 season sleeping bag with hood to withstand Negative 20 Degrees
- Sunscreen and lipsalve with an SPF 30 or better.

Photo equipment

-Telelens at least of 400m, better 600mm with teleconverters.
- Camera and spare batteries and large size memory cards
- Tripod

JAVIER MONTES MALAGÓN

Professional photographic guide, specialist on mountain and artic tours.

Javi Montes is an awarded profesional photographer, with residence in Val d´Aran (Pyrenees). He has erned a reputation as winter sports photographer, working with some of the most important brands.

However, Javi highlighted by his skill for wildlife photography, being an specialist in photographic stalking.

Javier is an experienced guide that work in tours with difficult logistics, visiting with preference artic areas where can apply all his knowledge about ice and snow photography.

Nowadays is organiser of some reputed photographic products at Pyrenees such as Capercaillie photography or Golden Eagle photography

Observations

The trip will be basically focused on the musk ox, having fantastic opportunities of getting nice pictures, but in the area there are other interesting targets such as caribus, arctic fox, arctic hare or Gyrfalcons.

The best of this trip

Greenland is perhaps one of the most suggestive and attractive destinations in the world. A huge island in the artic covered by ice and with a remote and beautuful coast plenty of wildlife.
